EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE IN THE HIGH SCHOOLS IN KUWAIT

Auther : Dr. H. A. El-Figi

High school students in Kuwait often have to face the problem of taking a drastic decision, which determines the future orientation of the course of their studies either to science or, to art and humanities.  This paper aims at analyzing individual, familial, societal and academic factors, which are believed to have their influence upon the student’s choice of his future field of specification.  It also aims at discussing the role of group guidance and counseling in directing High School students to specific fields of study, which may be commensurate with their personal inclinations and faculties.

An introductory part of this paper has been allocated to definitions, relevant terminologies and to reviewing previous literature.  This was followed by the findings and results achieved through the analysis of a nineteen-item questionnaire which was distributed among 249 High School students (both males and females) from eight schools.  Additional data pertaining to their grades at the close of the second high school year were also compiled due to their association with the decision-making process.

The findings of the study have brought to the four, five major determinations which lie behind the choices made by the students, namely: student inclinations, their mental abilities, the common belief that arts are relatively easier than science, the possibility of procuring higher scores in specific subjects and above all the number of scores achieved at the end of the second year.  All these controls reflect the fact that the students’ choices are mainly governed by their personal impressions, subjective perceptions and are far from being founded on objective judgments.  The study had also revealed that the role of school guidance and counseling in this respect is not only lacking, but also completely recessive.  It is therefore recommended that educational guidance should be enhanced and developed through the establishment of a counseling center capable of extending training programmes to public schools and higher education institutes.
