THE INTERESTS AND ATTITUDES OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TOWARDS WORK IN KUWAIT

Auther : By: Dr. Saad J. Al-Hashel

The objective of this study is to identify the attitudes and interests of high school students towards linking school and work and how the world of work can be integrated to school programs.

This study is also concerned with education and work, and how school programs and experience are related to economic conditions. It also deals with the areas that are directly influenced by linking schools and employment such as social developments, child personality development, and economic progress, and the strategies for achieving such linkage. This linkage helps students become aware of the world of work, provides them with marketable skills and the ability to choose their careers.

The descriptive survey method is employed in this study; eighteen items concerning approaches toward education and work were designed and submitted to 501 students in different Kuwaiti schools.

A statistical analysis of the attitudes and interests of high school students was carried out, then the percentage was used to determine the differences among the students towards linking school and work.

The results of the study indicate that students need learning and occupational guidance. However, learning guidance was considered of high priority. It also indicates that students need to know their roles as workers in the society, and be aware of the value and impact of work on the community.

This study also reveals that students prefer to continue their studies rather than to work after high school. As a conclusion, it shows the importance of occupational guidance in schools, and the significance of integrating school programs to the world of work because it can make students aware of the various work activities available, render education, more meaningful and relevant to the needs of society, and insure that students are properly prepared for the exciting employment opportunities.
