THE GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION OF IRAN AND THE SECURITY OF THE U.S.S.R. (1918 – 1946)

Auther : By: Dr. Ahmed Bassel Al-Biatti

This paper aims at assessing the impact of Iran’s geographical location on the security of the Soviet Union and its effect on the political relations between the two neighbouring states. The 1921 treaty between the U.S.S.R. and Afghanistan depicts the importance of the later to the strategic interest of the Soviet Union. The Iranian plateau as a veritable land, bridge between the Soviet Union and the Indian Ocean represents a geographical region of paramount importance. This is not only attributed to its proximity to the oil-rich Gulf, but also, because it lies very close to the Islamic Republics of the U.S.S.R. with their religious vulnerability.

The paper also traces the historical development of Iranian-Soviet political relations throughout the period extending from 1918 to 1946. The primary objectives of Soviet orientation towards Iran could be crystallized in denying access to Iran, on the part of any other super-power and simultaneously gaining foot-holds on Iranian territory to check its utilization in any aggressive endeavour.
