PROSPECTS OF AGRICULTURAL AND FISHERIES DEVELOPMENT IN THE G.C.C. MEMBER STATES

Auther : By: Dr. Fouad H. Beseisu

The GCC embraces an area overwhelmingly rich in crude oil and natural gas reserves, but severely lacking in other natural endowments except fisheries. This paper aims at exploring the features, prospects of agricultural and fisheries development in the six member states from the viewpoints of common features, limitations and achievements.

Agricultural development is greatly hampered by difficult environmental conditions and the lack of some basic elements such as, water, manpower and managerial skill. Agricultural potentialities are comparatively better in both Saudi Arabia and Oman than in the remaining four member states. Despite the fact that agriculture is heavily subsidized, yet progress has been quite modest particularly due to the depletion of underground water resources. The introduction of new technologies and the encouragements of researches in water conservation and management may, however, lead to more positive results. On the other hand, food security could only be achieved through integration with the wider Arab Region.

As regards the development of fisheries, available statistics show that actual production is well below the apparent potentialities. Co-operation between the six member states of the GCC should be centered around research, training and development of both territorial and commercial fisheries. Concerted efforts to confront the disastrous effects of pollution on marine ecosystems may lead in the future, to a more effective and productive utilization of the marine resources of the Gulf.
