A STRATEGY FOR AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENTIN THE SULTANATE OF OMAN - AN ENVIRONMENTAL PERSPECTIVE -

Auther : Dr. Adel Ibrahim Hindy

The study is composed of three headings: the first examines the potentialities of agricultural development in its horizontal expansion, the second, deals with the ways and means of increasing the productivity of the present cultivated areas and the third outlines the relationship between the environment and development.

Oman, at the eastern extremity of the Arabian peninsula has a total area of some 300,000 Sq.Km or approximately 71 million acres, of which more that 99% is uncultivated.  Therefore, priority for agricultural development should be given to expanding the cultivated area and increasing its productivity.  This should be attained by the development of new systems of crop rotation, which may be more remunerative than the traditional system.

The environmental perspective in this paper takes into account the interaction between the environment and agricultural development.  Livestock development is now experimented in a number of pioneer projects for cattle and sheep breeding particularly in the Batina coast which may become the future area for integrated forage and livestock production because water supplies are limited and with a high salt content, tolerable only to forage crops.

The physical and human potentials for agricultural and rural development could enable the Sultanate of Oman to ameliorate the economic level of production both quantitatively and qualitatively.  A number of pertinent recommendations were submitted in the conclusion.
