KUWAIT PRESS VIEWS ON OIL QUESTIONS IN THE ARABIAN GULF

Auther : Dr. Awatif Abdul Rahman

This study aims at determining the extent and kind of interest of Kuwaiti Press as regards the oil questions in the Arabian Gulf, in terms of the space allocated to these questions in Kuwaiti newspapers.  The modes of publication may vary from: news items, essays, reports and interviews; each may serve in measuring the major trends in tackling oil problems.  The selected samples were confined to four daily newspapers: Al-Qabas, Al-Siyasah, Al-Watan and Al-Raai Al-Aam, throughout the period extending from March to December 1978.  Three basic oil issues were analyzed namely: oil prices, the effects of the devaluation of the dollar on the oil producing countries and OPEC’s relations with the Arab World and the rest of the world.

Three methods of treatment were resorted to namely: the information survey approach, the historical approach (concerning the historical background of the oil question in the Gulf) and the comparative approach dealing with the quantitative and qualitative particulars of oil issues in their relation to the four selected newspapers.

The findings of the survey have revealed a varying degree of interest and stress by the four newspapers which have published thirty nine different articles, amongst which eleven essays, eight interviews, nine news reports, three openings and one comment.  Most of then published materials were edited by staff writers (37 articles) and the remaining two were derived from local news agencies.  Important Indicators were reached through the analysis of the three previously mentioned oil issues.  Thus, this paper represents a pioneering effort in depicting the major trends of public opinion in its relevance to the basic oil issues.
