OTTOMAN ADMINISTRATION OF AL-BASRAH DISTRICT DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY

Auther : By: Ali Shaker Ali

The writings that deal with the history of Al-Basrah during the Ottoman period, have so far been mainly interested in the political aspects of the history.  The administrative, economic, social and cultural aspects have not received sufficient attention.  This may be due to the fact that these writings depend on general Ottoman sources, which make little reference to the administrative organization in the districts and regions ruled by the Ottoman State.  Some of these writings draw upon local Arabic sources, which mainly emphasize the political features of history.  Other works depend on books written by foreign travelers who visited Iraq.  These books should not be considered reliable sources unless their contents are supported by other historical sources.

This paper aims at studying the Ottoman administration of Al-Basra district during the second half of the sixteenth century.  It depends on reliable historical documents, which have not been sufficiently and systematically used by modern Iraqi historians.  The paper attempts to uncover some important information about a significant area in the modern history of Iraq.
