THE ROLE OF COGNITIVE STYLES IN DETERMINING THE VOCATIONAL INTERESTS AMONG BOTH SEXES OF KUWAITI YOUTH

Auther : By: Dr. Anwar M. El-Sharkawy

The field dependence-independence cognitive styles are examined in this study, together with their relationship to vocational interests. Whereas the person with a field dependence style is likely to rely on external referents as guides in his perception, the field independent person tends to give greater credit to internal referents.

The ways in which these styles express themselves can be illustrated by three of the test used to assess an individual’s standing on the Field dependence-independence dimension. These tests are: the body adjustment test, the rod and frame test, and the embelled figures test. The researcher has participated in developing the last one. The population of the study included university students, male and female.

The results of the study has shown that:

  1. Male who are more Field independent are more interested in mechanical, mathematical and scientific fields.
  2. Males who are more Field independent exhibited a greater interest in outdoor work.
  3. Males of both, Field dependent, and Field independent are more interested in persuasion than female.
  4. There are no differences between males and female of both, Field dependent, and Field independent in interest music literature and fine arts.
  5. Female of both Field dependent and Field independent are more interested in Social Service, than males, but Females, who are more Field dependent are more interested in that field than Field independent.
