CIVIL EDUCATION OF PALESTINIAN CHILDREN IN QATAR

Auther : By Dr. Tawfic E. Farah

The formation of viable political communities has been a central concern of systematic empirical analysis for several decades. One of the central elements in such a process is the growing sense of “we-ness” within a collection of people territorially associated. This process, however, is also a generational problem. Each polity teaches its new members the symbols, rituals, myths, values and mutual identifications that underpin its structure. This process is sometimes referred to as political socialization or political learning; it may be used either to maintain existing regimes or to create new political realities.

The Palestinians have been engaged in a long-term struggle for national survival. This paper investigates the extent to which a universe in Qatar of young Palestinians (Often referred to as the “Generation of Liberation”) are committed to or at least believe in and support the goals of Palestinian struggle. Hence this paper, whose concerns are empirical rather than theoretical, is interested in discerning the political orientations of such children.

Data in this report are derived from the responses of a 100 Palestinian students (65 boys and 35 girls) attending junior high schools in Qatar. Their ages ranged from 10 – 16 years old.

The survey instrument was made up of a 35 – item questionnaire. Each respondent was interviewed separately (All interviews were conducted in Arabic). Study was completed in the spring of 1976.
