THE STUDY OF SAUDI FOLKLORE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY INTERNATIONALLY AND PRACTICALLY

Auther : By Dr. Mohamed Al-Jawhari

During the past two decades, the intellectual movement in Saudi Arabia had witnessed a number of scholars who were interested in collecting and studying some of the elements of Folklore.

However, those endeavors – are to be blamed – for they are contained only to one aspect of Folklore names the popular literature with its different kinds. Indeed, their inadequate view of Folklore prevented them from realizing non-literary aspects of popular literature.

It is known that Folklore includes all aspects of traditional culture with its material elements and non-materials’ as well. The study of Folklore attempts to throw light on traditional culture from various angles: historical, geographical, social and psychological. In short, traditional culture is a perfect expression of man’s life and thought.

The scholars divided Folklore into main elements:

  1. Popular habits and traditions.
  2. Popular beliefs and conventions.
  3. Popular literature.
  4. Material elements (instrument of work, clothes, jewels and accessories) and popular Arts.

It is noteworthy that these elements are interrelated. For instance a study of literature cannot be fully understood apart from contemporary habits, social occasions, beliefs, and material culture. Similarly, each element of Folklore cannot be understood from the others.

The study of Folklore – as any new field of science – started with individual attempts and scattered endeavors motivated by their eagerness and concern to preserve their heritage from oblivion.

For a century and a half Folklore was able to establish a theoretical frame characterized with adequacy and competence. The previous studies are marked with the historical analysis, which in itself is inadequate in learning the functional analysis of Folklore’s elements.

Therefore, any researcher who is interested in any part of Folklore should not ignore the previous theories, for better knowledge of the preceded endeavors. Eventually his (or her) studies will be more useful and comprehensive.

Theoretically and practically Folklore has a great significance.

Folklore takes part in studying the history of culture and social life. Many researchers employ the elements of Folklore in reconstruction.

Folklore is utilized to analyze some processes of cultural change and planning.

It also participates in analyzing the interrelated relations and mutual influence amongst different civilizations. This process is known as Acculturation.

Folklore has a great importance in revealing of some national characteristics of nations.

Practically Folklore aims to solve some problems that encounter one on society.

The information resulted from the study of Folklore are employed in learning the processes of development and modernization.
