DEPENDENCE IN UNDER-DEVELOPED COUNTRIES WITH APPLICATIONS TO THE ARAB GULF COUNTRIES

Auther : By Dr. Antonios Karam

This paper contains two major parts. Part one covers a review of the literature on dependence, which was mainly based on the contribution, made by Latin American social scientists. Then the concept of dependence was linked to the literature on economic development where distinction was made between radical and traditional writers.

Part two attempts to see whether the concept of dependence is applicable to the Arab Gulf countries. For this purpose, we have used a set of eight dependence indicators that we have developed in another publication, and computed them (except the technological dependence indicator). The statistical results were then evaluated.

It was found that six out of the eight dependence indicators for the countries in question are extremely high. However, the remaining two indicators (measuring geographic exports and imports concentration) were found not to be unduly high. Finally, it was found that the technological dependence indicator was the most threatening.

The paper concluded that the Arab Gulf countries can reduce - and eventually eliminate - their external dependence through regional and Arab economic cooperation and integration.
