AL’AIN DISTRICT (ABU DHABI) A STUDY ON OASIS AGRICULTURE DEVELOPMENT

Auther : By Dr. Zein Eldin A. Ghunaimy

The paper reflects mainly the field work carried out at Al’Ain district during the period from 23-29 March 1978. Al’Ain is the most important agricultural area in Abu Dhabi. It is an oil-established date gardens. Since the sixties, profound and rapid changes have been taking place in the pattern of agriculture. It can be said that the whole character of oasis agriculture has changed rapidly. The main features of development during the last few years can be summarized as follows:

  1. The area has developed from traditional date gardens to modern units specialized in producing vegetables, folder crops and fruits.
  2. Modern agriculture techniques as drip irrigation, protected cultivation, chemical fertilizing, experimental stations, using tractors, dairy farming, veterinary care and afforestation have become familiar in the area.
  3. The “Aflaj”, the traditional source of water, have become less important after the expansion of pumping water from wells and boreholes.
  4. Vegetable production can meet all the increased local demand and, a surplus is sent to Abu Dhabi.

This development is due to the economic and social changes, which have taken place at Al’Ain as a result of the high revenue from oil. This has encouraged the government to carry out and finance many projects and to offer free aid to farmers.

Finally, the agricultural development at Al’Ain faces some problems, which must be overcome, especially the shortage of water resources.
