THE EXPERIENCE OF THE ARAB GULF THEATRE IN KUWAIT

Auther : By Ahamd Abu-Matar

In this study the author presents the different stages the theatrical movement had gone through in Kuwait, from the late Thirties till now, particularly the Arab Gulf Theatre troupe.  The theatrical movement started in the late Thirties and was directly connected with the establishment of the different educational and cultural institution at that time and relates how amateur theatre groups were formed at schools and how the negative look of society towards theatre, prevailing then, was overcome.  He stages then the development of the theatrical movement which culminated in forming the first theatre troupes in Kuwait, particularly the leading Arab Gulf Theatre troupe in 1963 and its role in introducing the female element on stage.

At the beginning, the Arab Gulf Theatre troupe was facing financial problems but their determination challenge all problems and to proceed forward carried them to great success and achievements, especially during the last few years when they started staging their plays outside Kuwait.  In their early experience they depended a lot on foreign classical play scripts but later on turned to playing their own scripts focusing on the individual and his relationship to past and present and to what is surrounding him.  In all their late plays they concentrated on the problems facing the Kuwaiti society after the short and speedy transformation from a pearl diving and fishing society to an oil society, the confrontation between past and present values and material wealth.

Their social critic works dealt with three main topics:

1.     The general struggle: Pear diving general versus oil generation,

2.     Civilization struggle: The confrontation with new improved values and traditions, and

3.     Direct confrontation with society: The constraints of social advancement.

The troupe contributed a great deal to the cultural and theatrical development in Kuwait and has acquired by now the experience and reputation which make it one of the leading Arab theatre troupes.
