Culture, Health and Illness: New Aspect in a Contemporary Anthropology

Yagoub Y. Al-Kandari

Health and Illness can not be understood without considering the socioculutral factors. These factors play a major role in the human health wellbeing. The major aim of this book is to overview the cultural paradigms of health and illness. It concentrates on the interaction among these aspects and how anthropology has been involved in dealing with the contemporary health issues. The importance of this book can be recognized from the lack of Arabic studies in this field particularly. To the author knowledge, studies concentrating on the contemporary health issues and its relationship with the cultural factors are rare in the Arab world. This book try to answer major questions: What are the new aspects in anthropological studies that are related to health and illness?; What are the historical roots of anthropology that concentrate on health and illness?; What is the change that has been happened?; What is the reason for anthropology to adopt the interdisciplinary approach regarding the health and how it succeeded?; How can anthropology define health and how natural and medical sciences do?; What is Human Population Biology?; What are the major cultural factors that cause illness?; What is the biological basis at the physical differences among ethnic groups in the population?; How Social and Psychological Stress effect health and diseases in modern society?; How cultural factors effect the occurrence and incidence of epidemiological diseases?; What is the new anthropological aspect in studying diseases?; What is the new aspect of anthropology to study what is called Chronic Degenerative Diseases. The author depends on the library research as a tool to answer these questions using available contemporary studies and analyzing some statistical information which have been gotten from different resources. The book contains eight chapters. The first three chapters concentrate on the general introduction to study culture and its relations to public health. Chapter one is entitled: Introduction to Culture, Health, and Illness; chapter two is entitled: Human Population Biology: transdisciplinary science; and chapter three entitled: The Biological Basis of Physical Differences Among Ethnic Groups in the Population. Chapters four to six concentrate on the effect of sociocultural change and modernization on health. Chapter four is entitled: Food, Nutrition and Culture; chapter five is entitled: The Effect of Cultural Factors on The Occurrence and Incidence of Epidemiological Diseases; and chapter six is entitled: The Effect of Social and Psychological Stress on Health and Diseases in Modern Society. The seventh chapter is entitled: Chronic Degenerative Diseases: new aspects in anthropological studies. Finally, the conclusion of this book constitutes the ninth chapter.
