The Lexicon of Affective Traits

By Dr.: Ahmed m. Abdel – Kalek

Abstract

In an early time, all the important aspects of the human personality has been recorded in the body of the language. Therefore, the natural language lexicon almost include every attribute of this personality. The lexical study of personality aims to collect the personality- relevant terms, classify them into specific fields, and compile these terms in lists in which the human personality can be studied. The lexical approach is very important in the field of personality psychology. It was applied in many languages of the world, including Arabic,i.e. the lexicon of personality- relevant terms, which is based on the Intermediate Lexicon of the Arabic language. The aim of the present study was to compile an Arabic lexicon for terms (adjectives, nouns, and verbs) which could describe the affective and emotional aspects of personality, depending on the lexicon of personality-relevant terms.

This study started by giving a specific definition for the affective aspects, and then a group of specialized researchers in psychology were requested to check the terms that fall under that definition in the lexicon of personality-relevent terms. A cross validation was carried out, and many revisions and corrections were wade. As a result , the lexicon of the affective traits becomes available in 172 pages, arranged alphabetically, and includes the entries with a brief explanation. This lexicon is considered as a good material for furture studies in both the psychological and lexical aspects.
