Keys to the Structure of Mahmoud Darwish's 'Why have you left the horse alone?' (in Arabic)
Auther : Naser Jaber
The study aims to find answers to queries about structure in Mahmoud Darwish’s “Why have you left the horse alone?” published in 1995, through monitoring new structural phenomena scattered throughout the work, and studying them through four structural keys which, taken together, provide an answer to queries about the work’s structure. I have called the first of these keys repetitional structures’. This consists of some technical devices such as ‘production of compounds’, ‘employment of effects’, ‘repetition of conjugational and grammatical structures’ and ‘opening and closing techniques’. The second key is ‘confinement’. The poet confines himself to what he need not necessarily be confined to; such confinement as would show rare, unique linguistic and poetic abilities. The third key is ‘textualism’ – the poet being influenced by other texts, such as ‘self-textualism’, the poet using expressions he had previously used, and ‘verbatum textualism’, the poet citing texts used by others. The fourth key seeks to find answers to the rythmic structure of this work.
