The Role of Satellite Television Channels in the Life of Kuwaiti Youth: An Applied Research Study on a Group of Kuwait University Students (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdullbasit Abdulgalil , Mohammad Moawad

This applied research study aims at investigating the role of satellite television channels available for Kuwaiti youth. The study relies on a random sample of students enrolled at Kuwait University which consists of nine various colleges accommodating 17,490 students according to the 1996/1997 academic year estimate.

The present study is an attempt to collect data regarding what satellite television channels do Kuwait University students view? How much do they view? What reasons motivate them to view? What channels do they mostly view? What programs do they mostly prefer to view? What role does viewing television play in their lives?

A survey method is used by the researchers relying on a random stratified sample consisting of 200 students. Since the majority of Kuwait University students are Kuwaiti nationals, a proportional method was used to ensure that 90% of the sample were Kuwaiti students while 10% were non-Kuwaiti.

The questionnaire used in this study consists of 19 questions. All were proofread by scholars at Kuwait University, and were protested on a limited sample of 30 students to ensure the reliability and validity of data. All questionnaires were distributed during the summer course of the academic year 1996/1997. Data was then categorized and analyzed.
