The Arabs and Islam in Southeast Asia: A Historical Reading in the Sources of Islamic Heritage and Contemporary Literatures (in Arabic)

Auther : Ahmed I. Abushouk

This study aims at proposing a new historical reading of the advent and spread of Islam in Southeast Asia in consultation with the sources of Islamic heritage and Malay historical annals. It uses contemporary historical works as disciplinary tools for understanding the history of the arab and Islamic influence in Southeast Asia, and constituting an inventive common ground for analyzing the presence of the Arabs and Islam in the region. It also explains how the foundation of the Arabic and Islamic presence has been built on interchangeable political, social and cultural values between the center (the Middle East) and the peripheries (Southeast Asia).

The first part of this study gives a historical background of the location of Southeast Asia within the classical concept of the seven regions adopted by Arab geographers for dividing the inhabited parts of the globe. It also traces the emergence of the “Southeast Asia” and its development in modern literatures. The second part is confined to the discussion of the advent of Islam and its spread in Southeast Asia, and the nature of the missionary role played by holy men and traders who came from the capitals of the Muslim World in the Middle East and contributed to the consolidation of Islam and its cultural, social and political values. The third part gives a critical presentation of the western theories that deal with the advent of Islam, its spread in Southeast Asian and its role in the reformation of the basic traditions and norms of the society. The last part focuses on the civilizational impact of Islam on religious, cultural and social and political aspects in Southeast Asia.
