The Old Arab Poem and The Experiment of Modernity: A Reading in Khalil Motran Critical Thinking (in Arabic)

Auther : Ibrahim Ahmad Melhem

This study treats, through four axis, Khalil Motran’s critical view of old Arab poetry – the language of the poetry, the poetry and experiment, the structure of the poem, revivalism (poetic critique) and modernity.

Motran had imagined his doctrine in modernity as if it had been launching a doctrinal struggle, exactly as the romanticism had done, against new classicism or revivalism. He emphasized that the authority of heritage should not dominate over the subjectivity of the integrated heritage, should preserve the origins. In order to consolidate his critical thinking to modernity he attacked the revival of old Arab poetry and its revivalist critics whom he described as inanimate.

The strategy of the call to modernity required Motran to destroy the pattern (the old Arab poetry) in order to prevent contemporary poets from imitating the same. This strategy took two forms: first, mocking the pattern of the western (foreign) poems, styles, and language, or towards the alternate pattern that should be followed as an example.
