Why Pluralism Dominates Contemporary Philosophy (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdullah Al Jasmi

The paper discusses the changes which have taken place in the nature of philosophical thought since the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth centuries. The shift to pluralism and the abandonment of traditional philosophical systems, which started with Parmenides and Plato and reached a high point in Hegel’s philosophy during the Enlightenment, has transformed the aims, methods and the nature of philosophical questions. In this respect, the paper concentrates upon three main reasons for those changes. The first deals with the progress of empirical science and the emergence of the humanities and social sciences which had a major impact upon the approaches of philosophy to existence and the human being. The second discusses the invalidity of science as a metaphysical system. The third, which is the most important reason, attributes the changes not to pure science but to the impact of science on human thought and culture which can be seen in several distinctive features of contemporary philosophy, such as realism, objectivity, clarification, precision, empirical evidence, etc.
