Ceremonial Rituals of the Three Parts of the Supplication Poem (in Arabic).

Auther : Meshari Almousa

The paper studies a supplication poem by Jahili/classic poet, ‘Alqamah al-Fahl recited to King al-Harith. Based on significant critical studies, such as those by Mathew Clark, Kevin Crotty, and Fred Naiden that examined supplication poetry as it was in the societies of Ancient Greece and Rome, the paper aims at pointing out the ceremonial rituals that classic Arabic poems perform. The research method applied approaches the poetic text on light of recent human studies, especially anthropological ones, which successfully interpret common linguistic and mental aspects within the Ancient Greek and Roman societies (societies based on orality). The paper concludes with the following results:
-Anthropology theories aid in the interpretation of the phenomena of three-part poems, especially their tangible aspects, such as the beloved girl and she-camels.
-Poems are one of the rare ways to immortalize a person in Ancient societies that are based on orality.
-The paper also differentiates between apology poetry, which has been heavily studied by Arab scholars, and supplication poetry that is beginning to surface in foreign critical studies.

Keywords: supplication poetry, Jahili/classic Arabic poems, orality.
