The Motives of Pragmatic Enunciations in the Surah, “Yusuf” (in Arabic).
Auther : Mohammad Alzahrani
The purpose of this research is to uncover the general motives of surat Yusuf and to examine the relationship between these motives and their implications with the expressive language at its basic and metaphorical levels. The paper also explores the pragmatic enunciations in the surah. The researcher bases his study on the conversations that take place between the people mentioned in the surah and on the metaphorical imagery in the pragmatic dialogue among the people in the chapter (Jacob, Joseph, Joseph’s brothers, the caravan, and Aziz’s wife). The paper’s aim is to shed light on the language principles adopted by the discourse in the surah, as well as to portray the impact of functional pragmatics on the surah on the one hand, and the syntactical effects on the other hand. The research identifies argumentation in the surah, for the surah revolves around issues that reveal the presence of antagonistic and hostile attitudes. In conclusion, the dialogue in the Quranic text is a pragmatic dialogue directed towards a third party, without this party being involved. The dialogue requires motives that have not been spoken about or revealed. The research affirms that the metaphorical imagery in the surah confirms the validity of the findings by other linguists. One of the most important aims of the surah is to prove the ethical value and its antithesis. Keywords: Surat Yusuf, pragmatic motives
