The Military Interrelations Between the Rum Seljuk Sultanate and the Byzantine Empire During the Period 463- 572 H/ 1071- 1176 A.D. (in Arabic).
Auther : Fuad Dwikat
The history of the Rum Seljuk Sultanate in Minor Asia is one of the most important periods in history. It is especially important for researchers of the Crusades. The history of the Crusades cannot be fully understood without a thorough understanding of the history of the Rum Seljuk Sultanate. This is because the conquest (Fath) of Anatolia by the Seljuks was one of the reasons why Europe initiated the Crusades. Another reason was their role in resisting the Crusaders who crossed Anatolia while heading to the Levant. Numerous aspects of this Sultanate’s history are still vague, and this is what stimulated the author to study the military interrelations between the Rum Seljuk Sultanate and the Byzantine Empire. This paper examines the following topics: -The preludes of the military cooperation between the Seljuks and Byzantium. -The military cooperation with Byzantium at the time of Sulayman bin Qutlumush, the founder of the Rum Seljuk Sultanate. -The military cooperation at the time of the disintegration of the Rum Seljuk Sultanate. -The military cooperation between the Rum Seljuks and Byzantium during the Crusades. Keywords: Military cooperation, Rum Seljuks, Byzantium, Crusades.
