Experience and Discourse in the Collection of Poems, “To You, My Son” (in Arabic).

Auther : Ihab al-Najdi

The loss of a child may lead to the formation of a poetic text that is unique in the genre of eulogies and that is often concerned with what a child means to a parent, for the former is part of the latter. A child’s presence is, in fact, a presence of the parent and an extension of him/herself. It is the personification of love in its purest form, and its loss is the biggest ordeal.
The researcher strives to interpret and explore the sentimental poetic experience of the Kuwaiti poet, Su’aad Al-Sabah, in her eulogy of her eldest son, Mubarak. Her collection of poems, “To You, My Son,” which focuses on this eulogy, is unique due to two major aspects: One is that it innovates Kuwaiti Poetry, and the other is that it laments the loss of sons in modern Arabic poetry. Su’aad Al-Sabah’s experience represents a facet of current developments in eulogies of children (sons), and a glimpse into the child’s life. The eulogy has special features in its discourse and in its dimensions of thought and emotion; hence, it deserves a thorough reading and interpretation through textual analysis. This reading involves three areas of focus:
1- Eulogical Context
2- Experience and Interpretation
3- Eulogical Discourse
