Amīr Dimirdāš Son of Gubān and His Relationship with Sultan al-Nāsir Muhammad bin Qalāwūn From His Emergence until His Death 728 A.H./ 1327 A.D. (in Arabic).

Auther : Sanad Abd al-Fatah

The reference books of the Mamluki era are of great significance, for they include certain important characters who have brought about many problematic issues. One such character is Dimirdas son of Guban, the Mongolian refugee who received care by al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun and was later executed by Qalawun. The researcher sheds light on Dimirdas’ upbringing, family, his main characteristics, the reasons behind his coming to Egypt, and the reason behind his execution by al-Nasir Muhammad, who initially offered him sanctuary. Finally, the researcher discusses Dimirdas’ impersonator who emerged after his death and pretended to be him, ruling the Roman country in his place for a number of years!
The research concludes that despite the grandiose position of Dimirdas and Qarasunqur in the Mamluk dynasty and the Mongolian Empire respectively, it did not intercede for them when the Sultan of Egypt, al-
Nasir Muhammad’s interests were met with those of the Mongol Khan, Abu Sa’id. A deal was made between the two, in which both parties were required to execute each other’s rivals. On the one hand, with the help of the Mongol Khan, Al-Nssir Muhammad aimed to kill Qarasunqur to avenge his brother Al-Ashraf Khaleel. On the other hand, Abu Sa’id sought to eliminate the last of the Guban family, that reached the pinnacle of power during his era. Clearly, Dimirdas was right when he said before his execution that one mustn’t trust the kings especially when their personal interests are met, for there aren’t any customs, or solace to secure the foreigner entering the Mamluki and Mongolian states.
