The Abbasid Knowledge Society in the Third Century AH (In Light of Hunayn ibn Ishaq's Treatise Addressed to Ali bin Yahya Almunajjem) (in Arabic).

Auther : Ahmed Assirri

This study introduces the Abbasid knowledge society in the third century AH, in light of a treatise written by the genius translator Hunayn ibn Ishaq (194-260 AH / 808-873), to his friend Ali bin Yahya Almunajjem, one of the main supporter of the translation activity at that time. The treatise shows the activities of the Abbasid knowledge society related to the translation movement from Greek language to Arabic and Syriac. Moreover the treatise reveals rich details of the scientific movement and its prominent representatives. We also gain new amazing ideas about the role of Bait Al-Hikma and its relation to that translation movement at that period.
The treatise highlights, clearly, how translation was developed in the context of the Abbasid society’s need for diverse old knowledge as well as the need for new books, summaries and compendiums to be written in Arabic. The treatise gives us also enough information about the curriculum that was taught in the old Alexandria medical school and how this curriculum was largely adopted by the medicine students in Baghdad.
The main goal of the treatise is originally devoted to know which of Galen's books Hunain had translated into Arabic and Syriac, but the rich details of this treatise shed enough light on the nature of the scientific activities done by the Abbasid knowledge society that is worth to be known.
