'And From the Mischief of the Envious One as he Practises Envy': Envy in the Light of the Theory of Limited Good (in Arabic)

Auther : Hessa Alrefai

This paper deals with the phenomenon of the 'evil eye' and the concept of 'Envy'. 'Envy' is a psychological belief in which the eye of the envious conducts its evil influence onto the envied. 'Envy' is a common belief among a certain group of people, especially in ancient civilizations. However, one finds many such practices exist as well in modern societies that enjoy limitless goods, which proves that the practice of envy is rather universal.
The research shows the relationship between the concept of 'Envy' and the theory of limited good. This theory is first introduced by the American anthropologist, George Foster. In his study of the peasant society in Mexico, Foster finds that the economic and social statuses of people are the main causes of envy. The poor envies the prosperous for fame and fortune because they believe that these people gained their position at the cost of others.
The jealousy- envy complex does not only affect people who possess wealth and material goods. It also looms over health, youth, motherhood, and family happiness. Such goods in life that people own are subject to the envy of some who wish to obtain said good.
In an effort to ward off envy, one turns to preventative and therapeutic measures. Often these measures clash with belief and some of them are considered to be superstition.
Some Arab traditional writers interpreted envy as a sign of jealousy, saying that 'Envy' is a feeling of a deprived one who detests God's bestowal of prosperity on the envied.
