The Ottomans in Tripoli of the West: Dialectical Relationship between the Society and the State (958-1330 A.H./1551-1912 A.D.) (in Arabic).

Auther : Attia al-Wishy

Despite the numerous books published about the Ottoman history in Arab countries, the presence of Ottomans in some of such countries had a special nature. The Ottoman presence in Tripolitania was of distinct characteristics, compared to the case in other Arab countries. The present research attempts to shed light on the period of Ottoman presence in Tripolitania, which extended for about three hundred and sixty years (958-1330/1551-1912), and to show the effects of such presence on the society's structure due to introducing new elements of a special nature. The paper also examines the re-arrangement of the political and cultural conditions, especially with regards to the relation between Society and State. The research approaches questions such as: How did such a relation emerge? How did it evolve? How did this relationship result in what can be called "State" in a political and cultural sense?
The research focuses on elaborating on the various cultural effects of the Ottoman presence in Tripolitania from different aspects.  Furthermore, it highlights the nature of the relation that evolved between society and state under such presence, and reveals aspects, characteristics and developments of such a relation, especially with respect to the idea of the Arab Ottoman identity and its dialectics that controversially evolved side by side with other ideologies that deemed the Ottoman presence in Arab countries as a sign of military occupation and political colonization. This controversy naturally contradicts with a set of inherent and hidden considerations and facts that this research tries to reveal and clarify.
The research concludes with a set of political and cultural factors that over time have affected the structure of society and state from the beginning of the Ottoman presence in these countries until their departure in 1330 /1912.
In summary, the research is a scientific attempt to bridge gaps in the history books about the Ottoman presence in Tripolitania, and to rectify the cracks resulted from the deformation of the era of this presence. In this respect, the research benefited from some sources and references that tackled the history of that era, and based its conclusions on said sources.
