The Terms in Abul-Abbas Thaalab's Rules of Poetry and Their Perptuation in the Arabic Rhetorical and Critical Heritage (in Arabic)

Auther : Ibtisam Abo Mahfooz

The present study seeks to investigate the first stages of the formation of the Arabic critical and rhetorical terms with the aim of highlighting the Arabic origins of terms. It also aims to study the early critics' way of handling terms (either through acceptance or disapproval). Besides this, it is an attempt to establish connections between the various terms on the one hand and to trace their formation process (in terms of fixedness or change) on the other hand. The early interest in terms goes as far back as Abul-Abbas Thaalab who took care of setting and identifying terms in the manner of grammarians. He had worked on forming his terms and innovating other terms. In fact, in his book, Rules of Poetry, we find the earlier forms of many terms which became fixed in the way he formed or set them, while the concepts of other terms took new terms to designate them. This is to say that the term unit (i.e. term/ concept) may be the same as Thaalab knew it or one of its elements may change. Indeed, the term is not static. Its formation process, throughout history and culture, acquires new intellectual and conceptual content. This content may intertwine and interact according to various contexts that help shape, or even change, them. This process serves to free the term from confusion, ambiguity, and subjectivity, while working on setting it in such a way that realizes its precision, clarity, and oneness of concept. In this manner, the term takes shape and becomes fixed or perhaps disappears.
