The Dissemination of Christianity in Southern Jordan during the Byzantine Period (324-636 AD): Historical and Archaeological Evidence (in Arabic)

Auther : Mohammed Al-Nasarat , Saad Al-Tuwaisi

This paper tackles the question of the dissemination of Christianity in Southern Jordan during the Byzantine period (324-636 AD). The research is based first on historical evidence in Byzantine sources such as the participation of Jordanian bishops in the ecclesiastical councils held in different parts of the Byzantine empire, and secondly, on archaeological evidences revealed by excavations and surveys in Southern Jordan.
The results reveal the dissemination of Christianity in Southern Jordan
during the early Byzantine period, even before it was declared the official religion of the empire. Moreover they reveal the dissemination of the phenomenon of building and the multiplicity of churches in the same region. This indicates the presence of a large population in the region during the Byzantine period, and perhaps of the gowth and spread of Christian doctrines.
