Aspects of Moderation in the Linguistic Attitudes of the Prague school (in Arabic)

Auther : Fawzi Al-Shayeb

Moderation is a preferred principle in everything; because virtue is always located in the middle between two ends, both of them are undesirable: excess and negligence. Since every action has a reaction, thus extreme linguistic attitudes and opinions always lead to similar extreme reactions, but in general extremism is rejected, for it implies an autocracy in opinions, intolerance and the confiscation of the other's opinions. A close examination of the majority work of the Prague school shows that it was characterized by moderation and a reconciliation between extreme linguistic attitudes, which clearly appear in its moderate position between the extreme diachronic or historical approach of the "New Grammarians", and the extreme synchronic or descriptive approach of Saussure on one hand, and between the extreme mechanical behavioral approach of Bloomfield, and the extreme mathematical abstractive approach of Hjelmslev on the other hand, besides that, its mediate position between those who was interested in producing methods only, and those who was interested in producing theories only, finally between the traditional philologists who supported the concept of phoneme, and those who refused it, especially the scholars of the London school. All this give the impression of a praised flexibility that characterized Prague school in dealing with linguistic issues, hence it became as a juncture of thoughts. This flexibility qualifies the Prague school to produce a unified theoretical framework and compromised  ideas and opinions that had long been scattered between other linguistic schools. This good conduct made it a typical example of the coexistence and accordance of opinions instead of conflict and discrepancy.
