Cinema Novo or the Cinema as a tool of Resistance and Rebellion (in Arabic)

Auther : Bader El-Din Mostafa Ahmed

This study starts from the presupposition that political and social themes were present in Latin American cinema during the second half of the twentieth century. Issues and concerns of the people were its key substance, making it distinct from other cinematic patterns that prevailed at that time; such as "commercial" Hollywood and Avant-garde/Auteur cinema of Europe. Although this presupposition is quite general; this study will be based on the Brazilian "Cinema Novo'', specifically the works of Glauber (1939- 1981) Rocha, to prove itself.
The study is based on two overlapping streams. The first is a theoretical one, which focuses on the acclaimed director Glauber Rocha, and his sociological and political thought that he himself summarizes in his manifesto on Cinema Novo titled 'An Aesthetic of Hunger' (1965). The second stream is practical, in which concepts are applied to Rocha's cinematic project. It is a stream that is extended throughout the study, making the overlap that characterizes this study.
The study also adopts the comparative analytical approach in establishing its argument. It reveals the theoretical framework of Rocha's films, and tries to extract a body of concepts that may be considered as general critical approach to any socio-political film. To that end, the adoption of a comparative approach, required for such a generalization of concepts, is the key to attempting this study.
