Al-Jahiz's Argumentative Discourse: A Study of his References, Texts, And Techniques (in Arabic)

Auther : Haitham Sarhan

Arabic culture is distinguished by its diverse sources, where meanings and thoughts vary according to the communities and ethnicities which uphold them. This diversity motivated the communities to adopt certain discoursal strategies which aimed at realizing three objectives. The first was to keep knowledge systems in a state of continuing efficiency; the second to attract others to join their lines of thought and agenda; while the third was to face their opponents.
That knowledge resulted in developing the principles of dialogue and the enhancement of argumentation as substitutes to dogmatism and close - mindedness .The Mutazilites showed remarkable efficiency in this regard as their relationship with the authorities and their argumentative talents enabled them to develop argumentation techniques to counter their opponents, to reorder the public, and safeguard the community against the dominance of the dogmatists and protect their values from the anarchists.
This study aims at highlighting Al-Jahiz's argumentative techniques by reviewing his references, techniques, and texts to identify the characteristics of argumentative discourse and its semantics. This concerns us as such a discourse has its pragmatic motives and aims at influencing the attitude and position of the audience and convincing them to adopt the addressor's views. The research shows that Al-Jahiz was not removed from the disputes and struggles of the time. On the contrary, he was involved in the Mutazilites' thought and was an advocate of their principles.
