Lebead Ibn Aby Rabeya: Rhythm and Semantics (in Arabic)

Auther : Laila al-Sabaan

This research paper studies features of Rhythm in the poetry written by Labeed Bin Abi Rabia from a stylistic perspective. It begins with an introduction about the concept of rhythm. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part deals with external rhythm while the second is dedicated to internal rhythm of the poem.

The first part of the paper addresses the relationship between musical form and semantics in the poem. It shows how Labeed was distinguished among his contemporaries in terms of the meters he used. It shows that the Al-Kamel is the dominant meter in Labeeds poetry. This contradicts what was widely accepted about Al-Taweel being the most commonly used meter in pre-Islamic poetry. The study explores the implications of this. This part of the paper provides tables that demonstrate the relationship between the meter used in a poem and the content or purpose of this poem. It further explores the ratio of using meters to the total number of poems and number of lines. Then, this part of the paper moves to discuss the role that rhyme plays in rhythm and how his use of rhyme was unique. It also considers the roles of Rawi, Wasal, Khurouj, Tasees, and Dakheel.

The second part of the paper, however, studies internal rhythm of a poem which is achieved through implementing two features: al-Tasreei and al-Misraa.

The paper, through referring to all of these features, highlights the significant role that this distinguished rhythm used by Labeed plays in creating the semantics that, although distinct sometimes, dominates most of Labeeds poetry.
