The Attitude of Some Muslim Clerics Towards the Deportation of Cypriots and Fighting them in the Era of Harun Al-Rashid 170 – 193 AH / 786 – 809 AD (An Historical and Analytical Study) (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdulhadi Al-Ajmi

Political, social and cultural Arab history can best assist in revealing the past situation of the developed Islamic ages and tracing back several past relevant incidents. Sharia politics is no doubt a true expression of the political concept of Islam. It is very essential for a state to keep a good relationship with other states and fulfill its commitments with them so that the state can preserve its self-respect and well-bein. Politicians and leaders have the responsibility of considering all the changing situations and react to these situations with flexibility and objectivity.

The present research looks at the extent to which Sharia Fatwa affects political decisions, particularly those related to the state’s foreign policy. The invasion of Cyprus at the age of the musilm caliph Haroun Al-Rashid (170-193 AH / 786-809 AD) has been presented to serve as a good example of the relationship that existed between leaders and Islamic scholars at the time.

The Islamic history witnesses on having a correlation between politics and religion . The political leader Abdulmalek Bin Saleh inquired about the Sharia Fatwa regarding Muslims invading Cyprus and fighting Cypriots. He wrote to a number of  famous religious scholars seeking fatwa that can justify his political practices through Sharia Fatwa.

In this study, various scholars’ responses have been reviewed, including their rejections to invasions following agreements signed by Muslims in Al-Rashidi Age and in the Umayyad Age. There is consensus among these scholars that the state should respect such agreements in spite of the fact that the Omayyad ruling state came to an end long ago.
