The Anglo-Kuwaiti Relations: Their Transformation by Oil and Foreign and Native Political Changes

Auther : Najat Abdul Qader Al-Jasem

The aim of this study is to investigate the nature of the Anglo-Kuwaiti relations during one of the most critical eras of Kuwait history. It was the era which witnessed the beginning of oil exportation and initiating the great socio-economic transformation of Kuwait.

Throughout their relations with Kuwait, the British realized the strategic importance of this region. So, they made several attempts to reinforce their influence over Kuwait as long as possible. They proposed the appointment of a British Financial adviser, but it was rebuffed by Shaikh Ahmed Al-Jabir.

The attitude of his successor Shaikh Abdullah Al-Salem towards a similar proposal was indentical. The British were deeply concerned about the deterioration of their influence in Kuwait: They realized that the national elements were the real moving force behind the rise of anti-British tendency in the country.

This study has been undertaken with the primary assistance of a number of several other documented sources.

The Kuwaiti original sources have also been consulted.
