The Semiology of Title in Linguistic Studies (in Arabic)
Auther : Mohammad E. Barhoma
This paper seeks to elucidate the concept of title in linguistic studies according to semiological criteria. The title is a semiological system with both symbolic and iconical dimensions.
Semiological studies have dealt with the title and its indicative dimensions in the field of literary studies, in poetry and especially in drama; while linguistic studies remained lacking in such researches which enrich linguistic scholarship as a whole. Thus, this attempt deals with this long-neglected aspect.
After outtining certain aspects of semiology this paper concerns itself with the title being a widely diversified signal, rich in interpretative connotations. The paper elucidates and expounds on those functions of the title as are dealt with by scholars. Then, the paper applies these principles to a number of linguistic genres, such as lexicons, language study, and grammar; and analyses them according to semiological theories.
In sum, the paper brings to the surface a number of conclusions revealing the importance of “Litle-ization in linguistic studies and its connections with identifying textual content.
