The Role of Theology of Mu'tazila in the Renewal of Rabbinical Judaism: "Faiths and Convictions" by Sa'id ben Yusuf Al Fayyumi (10th Century) (in Arabic)

Auther : Abderrahim Himmad

It is under the constraints of acculturation that rabbinical judaism adopted the Mu’tazilite theology, which provoked a profound change in the sciences of the Jewish religion and the methods of exegeses inherited from the Talmudic period. The article is an analytical study of the work by Sa’id ben Yusuf (also known as Sa’adia Gaon). He adopted the theory of Mu’tazila, both in theory and in method. So his book faiths and convictions faithfully reflects the learned tendency to renew the rabbinical Judaism and to defend it against diverse opponents. Kalam or theology of Moutakallimin served successfully the purposes of Sa’adia. This study approaches the following subjects:

- Contexts of acculturation.

- The foundations of the theology of Mu’tazila and their echoes in Amanat wall’tiqadat.

- The theory of knowledge: Notions of Belies in Sa’adia’s book.
