Functional Syntagmatics: Questioning the Boundary between Nahaw and Ilm ma'ani (in Arabic)

Auther : Talal Wehbe, Hassan El-Abiad

In this article, we analyze the traditonal understanding of the concept science and the content of grammar, in order to define the science we call Functional Syntagmatics.

Functional syntagmatics is not equivalent to the traditional Arabic grammar, nor to the science of rhetoric. It is a science that includes syntax (nahaw), and pragmatics (ilmu Imaaani) - from rhetoric. Syntax and pragmatics - as defined by traditional Arab Grammarians - may be considered as two branches of one science that studies the relations between the syntactic units of discourse and between the syntactic units and the situation of communications.

Both syntax and pragmatics study the same type of units that is syntactic units. The link between the syntactic units on one hand and the situation of communication on the other, is the specific area of pragmatics. However, the situation of communication is also relevant to the study of Syntax. One can not explain the exact relations between the syntactic units in a given discourse, unless one relates that discourse to a situation. On the other hand, relating an utterance to a specific situation is not possible unless the speaker and the hearer refer to the same linguistic competence.
