Optimism/Pessimism and Job Performance (in Arabic)

Auther : Othman H. Al-Khadher

The present study aimed to assess the possible relationship between optimism-pessimism and job performance, as well as the effects of sex, marital status, and educational level upon optimism-pessimism. The sample consisted of 150 male and female Kuwaiti subjects working at the Kuwait Oil Company. Their mean age was 29.4 (SD=6.7). The study confirmed the positive relationship between optimism on one side, and job knowledge, quality and quantity of work, job discipline, sound judgment, directing, and general job performance on the other side (r ranged between 23 and 39). It also confirmed the negative correlation between pessimism and these variables. Also, pessimism correlated negatively with initiative, cooperation, and planning (r ranged between - .14 and - .34). No significant sex differences were found on optimism-pessimism. However, males have been seen by their supervisors as significantly being more knowledgeable, having initiative, and being cooperative. Moreover, no significant differences were found between married and unmarried subjects, nor among the different group of educational levels on optimism-pessimism. However, the married subjects have been seen to be significantly more knowledgeable and quality oriented, whereas those with high school degrees have been seen as significantly more productive than those with university degrees.
