Grammatical Illusion in Arabic With Reference to Sibawayhi's Book (in Arabic)
Auther : Rashed A. Jarary
This is a study of a linguistic phenomenon called attawahhum or grammatical illusion. I have tried to trace its origin in the book of Sibawayhi, the pioneer grammarian in Classical Arabic Grammar.
The introduction describes Sibawayhis book, its importance, and the attention it has got on the part of scholars. Some features of Sibawayhis method are also indicated.
The paper deals with the term attawahhum in the lexicon and in grammatical jargon. It means the act of analogy in which the elliptical structure is compared with the complete one and vice versa. This term is applicable to non-Quranic texts. With regard to the Quran however, it is considered an act of construing.
The paper pinpointed some situations of attawahhum not mentioned by Sibawayhi, but added by later scholars.
The conclusion comprises the results of this paper. The study has shown a great deal of places where interpretation is based on grammatical illusion in poetry and prose, and even in the Holy Quran. This means that grammatical illusion is an important means of interpretation of texts where the meaning is not clear.
