Analysis of the Saudi Urban System, Using the Rank Size Rule in Both its Previous and Revised Formats (in Arabic)

Auther : Ahmad Jaralla Al-Jaralla

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has undergone a rapid (change) development in almost all fields, particularly the Urban System.

These drastic changes in the urban system generated a lot of development problems from which the Kingdom suffered and is still suffering. This is reflected in the urban sprawl and haphazard growth of big urban centers like Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam. The overwhelming of urban growth in these cities created serious gaps in the urban system which consequently resulted in high concentration of population and activities in the big urban centers negatively affecting the smaller ones.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the Saudi Urban System using the rank size rule in both its previous and revised formats. The statistical data of sizes of cities for the years 1987 and 1993 are used to attain the following two objectives:

  1. Understanding the characteristics of the Urban System in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and identifying the main related problems.
  2. Comparing the findings obtained from applying both the previous and revised formats of the Rank size rule to the Saudi Urban System.

The data used in this study have been compiled mostly from secondary sources, particularly from Saudi Atlas of towns and 1993 population census results. This is in addition to other materials and reports. The study covers 51 urban centers in the year 1987 and 61 in the year 1993.
