The Evolutionary Pioneers In The Arab World (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdallah Al-Omar

This article deals with the pioneers of the evolutionary theory in the Arab world. It grapples with the different ideas, views and reactions of both protagonists and adversaries of the evolutionary theory. The aim here, however, is not to make a survey of all individuals and views relevant to evolutionism in the Arab World. During the last century the Islamic empire was relatively vast. Therefore, this article tends to include some parts beyond what is being known as the Arab world of today. The discussion of the ideas of the prominent figures would, hopefully, draw a picture of the nature of the evolutionary theory and the Arab intellectual climate of the time.

This article will deal, first, with the crises over Darwinism that took place in the Syrian Protestant College in 1882. Secondly, there will be a short exposition of the views of Dr. Shibli Shumayyil. On the whole, this physician is being considered the most celebrated evolutionary thinker of the Arab world. Next, there will be a discussion of the hidden factors that prompted Jamal AI-Din AI-Afghanis criticism of Darwinism. A short conclusion will provide views of both Ismail Mazhar and Salamah Musa, two evolutionary representatives of a later generation.
