Taha Hussain and The Case of Hellenic Influence on Arabic Rhetoric (in Arabic)

Auther : Tawfiq Al-Feel

Some modern researchers claimed that Arabic rhetoric did not adapt itself to the requirements of the modern renaissance and they tried to find reasons for this phenomenon. Other modern researchers endeavored to reveal the influence of ancient Hellenic thought, especially the works of Aristotle, on Arabic rhetoric, Taha Hussain was one of the first researchers who did this.

This paper draws a detailed comparison between two books; Criticism of Poetry by qudamah ibn Jaa’far and Al-Badii, by Andullah ibn al-Mutazz. The comparison concludes that the two books differ in their aims.

Finally, this paper comes to the conclusion that Arabic rhetoric was safe from Hellenic cultural raids until the end of the third century after the hefira.
