Kleisura in Asia Minor (638 - 950) A.D. A Historical Study (in Arabic)

Auther : Hashem Al-Jassem

This paper deals with the idea of the military situation in the late seventh century.

The loss of Syria and Mesopotamia had led to the dispersal of the divisions that once constituted the forces of magistri militum per armeniam and per orientem. Besides, these forces had scattered over local military strongholds, towns and cities, and could only slowly regroup and repel the Arabs.

Following the 640 A.D. withdrawal into Anatolia of various forces operating in Armenia and Syria, Heraclius seemed intent on forestalling further withdrawals by turning Cilicia into a no-mans land when he had withdrawn from Syria.

This he did by instituting a defensive region or Kleisura (SELEUKIA) and after that had constituted Klesoura (KAPPPADHKIA) and (KHARSIANON). In the second half of the ninth century on the frontiers, the «Kleisura» of Savasteia Mesopotamia Lycandos and Leaondokomis were set up.
