Conception of the Environment in Social Work, A Study in Practice Theory (in Arabic)

Auther : Al-Farooq Zaki Younis

Social Work, historically, has been committed to a conception of its practice based upon a person-situation formulation. This gave more emphasis to the reciprocal relationship between peoples problems and their environments. The concept psycho-social has been an expression of this dual concern of the profession, which has always been committed to helping people and to promoting more human environments. The relation between people and environments are changing and dynamic. Human beings are viewed as developing and adapting, through transactions with all elements of their environments. In the meantime, environment has become the center of concern in todays world. Environmental problems are becoming universal problems. It is high time to discuss the position of social work vis-a-vis the environmental issues of today.

The study, herein, presents an analysis of the conception of environment in social work. Major developments in this respect have been discussed, in historical perspective, along with the growing practice theory and new trends and models of social work practice, with emphasis on the general systems theory and the ecological perspective. Within this framework, the study has examined the potential role of ecologically oriented social work toward todays issues of environment and development.
