The Role of Distance in Communication (in Arabic)

Auther : Yahia A. Ahmad

This paper deals with the notion of distance which is a feature of nonverbal communication. The papers layout starts with the question of territoriality i.e. how an individual defines and claims the area surrounding him while interacting with others. Having clarified this, the paper then gives a clear definition of distance, and exemplifies its types and degrees and discusses the factors which affect the actual distance maintained between the speaker and the hearer.

The major and genuine contribution of the paper is its raising and questioning the notion of distance as perceived by Arabs. In order to fulfill this task, the author resorts to three basic types of arguments: linguistic, juridical and religious. The authors quest for more concrete evidence inspires him to carry out a field research. The subjects consisted of 122 Arabs (53 Males, 69 Females) of 14 different nationalities and seven age groups. The reponses were fed into an SPSS programme in order to obtain detailed statistical information. The final comments of the author reveal that Arabs have a deep understanding of distance; it is a notion which is engraved in their consciousness. That is why they are so sensitive to it and they frequently use it to achieve certain tasks and goals, whether intentionally or unintentionally.
