The Kuwaiti Crisis in Contemporary Poetry: Viewpoints & Tools (in Arabic)

Auther : Abdallah Al-Muhanna

This study aims to examine the poetry that has been written to deal with the Kuwaiti crisis so as to identify viewpoints and tools employed by poets in tackling such a crisis, which has never been precedented in Arabs contemporary history.

The study examines the causes of the problem then proceeds to study several phenomena that were associated with this catastrophe, which has been focussed on by a number of poets. Among such phenomena was the character of the head of the Iraqi regime. Poets drew many comparisons between him and his counterparts in old history. They showed how Arabs were shocked at his treason after a couple of decades during which he had claimed the role of an Arab hero until the truth was revealed on August 2, 1990. The study analyses texts dealing with the savage crimes committed by the Iraqi troops during the occupation period which included killing, torturing, maiming, raping and indiscriminate devastation to all aspects of life.

The study then closely examines the poetry written to record Kuwaiti resistance, its efforts to defend its land and the enemys brutal and violent reaction to it. This is done through examining all the dimensions of the linguistic frame, then the views of poets towards the loss of Kuwait, and their grieving feelings for the loss of an abundant sincere nation.

Then comes the sweeping longing for Kuwait from poets who were outside the country during the occupation, or those who were forced to leave home. Their feeling of loss was so overwhelming that it made their life outside their country a total misery. They were only used to one place i.e. their good homeland.

Then the study proceeds to analyse the poets stances towards the concepts of Arabism and nationalism, as slogans raised by Arab politicians for many decades. However, when these slogans were put to the test they immediately failed thus causing hopes to fall apart, values to disintegrate and Arabs to deteriorate because of this ordeal which uncovered all flaws. The study also exposes some Arab poets who kept mute towards this crime, but when aggression was defeated they started to talk degradingly of Arabs and criticise their behaviour.

The study finally reviews poets views of the restoration of Kuwait from a historical perspective and in the light of the facts of modern age. Such views - in the middle of the quick complex events - were the healing remedy to the bleeding wounds and the worn-out spirits. The study ends in examining the poets joy on the restoration of Kuwait. All the aforementioned points are dealt with within an analytical framework based on language in the first place.
