Morphology of the First-Order Streams in a Semi-arid Watershed: Wadi Shueib Basin, Jordan

Auther : Hassan Ramadan Salameh

Wadi Shueib Watershed drains into the Jordan river, and is dominated by a semi-arid climate and limestone lithology. Its drainge network consists of 666 streams, out of which 78.34% of total stream numbers and 62.47% of total steam lengths belong to the first-order. The first-order streams practiced backward wearing. Lateral planation and micro-piracy, leading to the shifting of drainge divides and, with a bifurcation ratio of 4.53 from streams of higher orders, supplying them with water and sediment discharges. Their morphology is mainly affected by lithology and location. The study reveals that streams which are closer to the mouth of the study basin and the trunk stream, particularly if they run on a nodular thick led to lowering of the mouth area, caused during the pluvial of the Pleistocene deep incision and meandering of the main stream. However, accelerated erosion which coincided with a steady slope retreat contributed to lowering of slopes in faulted country rocks.

Ther first order streams are not isolated from other streams. Close interrelation ships are revealed between different stream orders, mainly between water and sediment discharges, slope, length and erosional activities. Such streams contributed to the formation of an alluvialfan below the mouth area. The construction of a reservoir in 1970 escaped the fan from its sediment supply, which was accordingly trapped behind the dam where a small delta seems to be developed.
