A Study of Teachers' Evaluation of English Composition in Secondary Schools in Jordan

Auther : Mufeeq Doushaq, Khalaf Al-Makhzoomy

The purpose of this study was to investigate the criteria used by Jordanian teachers of English for evaluating secondary school students compositions in order to find out to what extent these criteria are consistent, systematic and comprehensive. Two instruments were used in this study; a questionnaire and a practical workshop where actual evaluating procedures were investigated.

The research showed that there is a considerable gap between the teacher’s theoretical background and their actual practice. Moreover, it confirmed that there is no common ground among teachers concerning the methods and criteria of evaluation. The research also showed that most teachers were inconsistent in their evaluation procedures. Finally, it was realized that those teachers need special training in evaluation. Therefore it has been recommended that intensive in-service training courses be organized in different places in Jordan to give special emphasis to composition evaluation and testing.
